For some months now, I planned to propose on Mackinac Island. We spent all day on the island; walking, eating, biking, walking, sampling fudge, walking, eating ice cream, walking. It was a great day. Exhausting, but it was fun.
I didn’t know, but Lonnie had hoped that I would propose this weekend. The timing was right and it just made sense that I would at this time. So she waited. All day. But as the day went on, I don’t know what kind of vibes I sent her, but it seemed less and less likely that I would.
Towards the end of the day we were sitting by the water, and I was going to do it. I told her I had a gift for her (unintentionally getting her hopes up). And out of my bag I pulled out a pack of photos of places we’d gone and adventures we had been on (instantly crushing all hopes of a proposal that day, again unintentional). My plan was to get a stranger to to take a photo of us right after looking through the photos, but no one was around.. So we walked somewhere and had dinner.
After dinner, we sat on a bench and scouted out someone that looked like they might be willing to take our picture. Fifteen minutes pass and we pick out two elderly ladies, ask, and they gladly obliged. After taking one, I get up, check, and tell them, “That’s great, could you take a couple more?” At this point, I’m so nervous. I’m trying to open my bag without Lonnie noticing, but I can’t do it (mostly because I’m clumsy and not slick at all). So I get up again, check on the photos, and ask if they could take a few more. This time, while they’re taking the photos, I pulled the box out of the bag and get down on my knee.
I had a whole speech in mind, like people do in movies, but I totally forget because I’m nervous, and I’m just kneeling there in silence for a few seconds. And then I croak out the big question, “Will you marry me?” Lonnie, completely caught off guard, had stopped breathing and forgot how to speak, but after a moment says “Of course!”
All the while, the old ladies and their family are taking photos. Afterwards they thank us for making them a part of it, haha.
So there’s the story. Not exactly how I pictured it, but it turned out better :)
